Dr. Amaral is the VP of Surgical Technologies in the Corporate Office of Science and Technology at Johnson & Johnson. He is the former President & CEO of Rhode Island Hospital. Before taking leadership of Rhode Island Hospital in 2000, Dr. Amaral trained as a resident, practiced surgery, and eventually became Chief of Surgery for the hospital. He has oversaw a $350 million capital renovation project, information services improvements, and stewarded the hospital from a $30 million loss in 2000 to a 4% profit in 2005. An innovator in minimally invasive surgical techniques and technologies, he was the co-developer of ultrasonically activated cutting Harmonic Scalpel currently sold worldwide by Johnson & Johnson. Currently he is a director of Sontra Medical (NASDAQ: SONT) and has served on the advisory boards of Davol, US Surgical, Stryker Endoscopy, Hereous Laser, Axya, and J&J Ethicon Endo-Surgery. Dr. Amaral received a BA from Providence College and MD from Brown Medical School.
